My wife and I did date night today at the New York restaurant. The service was great as soon as we entered. They were able to seat us without reservations and it got very busy and lively so we were happy we could get in. They have a really good wine list and pretty broad special list. Our salads were lacking - I ordered the roasted beets with goat cheese and I got a sliver of cheese and one beet thinly sliced. The entree mains were ok (filet and veal) but the sides were bland and consisted of an ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables with the uniformed consistency from a food vendor's frozen delivery - go fresh guys.

Went to the bogo last Friday! Called for reservations, a must for this little treat! We had the whitefish special and the rosemary chicken! Very good, and the service was perfect.

My husband and I are so thankful to have the New York restaurant here in Harbor Springs. It's one place we can go and know it will ALWAYS be consistent with great food.

This place really is the best in town (and quite reasonably priced). Try the wedge salad, the whitefish ravioli, any version of the planked whitefish, or -- if they have it -- the mussels. The fish preparation here is as good as Hungry Cat in LA. Also, the bar is superb. Always buzzy and fun, and the bartenders always do a lovely job with classic cocktails (and if you're into signature cocktails, the list here is excellent -- never to sweet). This update to my original review is required because I've noticed there are a few Yelp complainers about the snobbishness or the service. There is one server/sometimes hostess who's a real pain and unhappy and has a chip -- but otherwise, the service is better nowhere. Knowledgable, friendly, warm, and mature. With one small exception, the staff here is world class. (It's such a shame that one bad apple is giving this place a bad reputation.) Top secret: the bar carries pappy van winkle for an unspeakably inexpensive price. You're actually losing money by not sitting at the bar and drinking the whole bottle.

Enjoyed the BOGO entree special for "early birds". Great crab cake appetizer. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the escargot. Olives and bread service were fantastic. White bourdreaux by the glass (one of my faves and not always available by the glass). Great wine selection. I enjoyed a wedge salad with shrimp for my entree and my husband had the filet. We were both thoroughly impressed. Great service. Fun ambiance. We will always have The New York at the top of our list. Can't wait to return. Can't say enough about the always professional greeting and orchestration of Bill and Matt's impeccable taste.

Five stars is perfect and The New York Restaurant comes as close to that as possible, falling short on my fifth star criterion - quality of drinks. The Bloody Mary is at the top of the list and hailed as "legendary" or something, I can't recall exactly. Mine was terrible. Mainly, the food is great, the deal was fantastic, the service was top-notched and the ambience was fine. 4 Stars - order the Moscow Mule instead. :) Looking forward to returning here next summer.

Their food is good although plates are small. Service it's not the greatest. And its pricey. I would recommend this place but I feel like It was overpriced.

Our favorite Harbor Springs restaurant for dinner when we're in town. The menu is diverse, the wine selection is very good, there is a full bar, and the view & location can't be beat. I've never witnessed a table at New York so loud that diners requested a re-seating, but based upon Shannon C's characterization, I'd say that the treatment they received was fair. This is a great spot, and we look forward to going back later this month.

Excellent bottle of wine for $28. Filet and special of red snapper were excellent. Nice choice of entrees and salads. Tropical carrot cake was delightful. Coffee was excellent. Reasonable price for excellent food. We sat at the bar because we did not have a reservation. The bartender served us a lovely dinner even though she was busy. Very attentive.

Ended up here by accident menu posted out front seemed like our kind of place. Got seated right away on a Sat. at 5:30. They had a goat sampler plate of goat done 3 different ways. When the waitress came she mentioned they only had one goat sampler left, when I said I wanted it she literally ran to the kitchen to verify and placed my order. It was an awesome meal. My wife had the lamb shank which was also very good. We would def eat there again!

Not very good for the price. My fish was mushy & my husband had to send his steak back for them to cook it more & then they still didn't get it right. Service was good, servers were nice but food less than mediocre.

The New York is one of the "fine dining" establishments in HS. I've had the pleasure of dining here twice, with one of the visits being on New Year's Eve. When I go out to dinner on a holiday like NYE, I am not expecting the best service and food ever because, lets face it, the kitchen and waitstaff are usually slammed. Not the case on my NYE visit to the New York. We had a reservation and the 5 of us were seated immediately. The cosmo I ordered was perfect (not too strong) and the wine that we all had with dinner was really good too. Everybody was really satisfied with their meals. They serve fresh whitefish at the NY, and there are three different preparations from which to choose. The lemon/capers combo is the winner in my book. It was really yummy. So try it out, holiday or not. You will not be disappointed.

This is one of my favorites when I am in Harbor Springs. The staff is always so friendly and makes me feel like family - food is great. I especially like the roasted beet salad, "the Best Wedge Ever" salad, lamb shank, and their specials are always awesome. Wine list is good and drinks are served with a smile by Joe. I have always had a great experience eating here and highly recommend The New York whether you are just visiting Harbor Springs once or if you are a regular visitor or resident.

Went for a business dinner on a Friday night n June. Expected a finer dining experience and the menu matched. Décor is a bit stuffy but probably appropriate for who they want to be. ?? One of my clients ordered a lettuce wrap dish and the lettuce was dirty so we had to ask for more lettuce. I had the veal Oscar which was tasty but would have LOVED more of it. Nice wine choices by the bottle. Tad pricey but if you know what to look for, you can find a good bottle. We had eight at our table and I thought the service was slow. Restaurant WAS packed.

Just as it should be. Had dinner on Wednesday August 28. Service was excellent and the food was better. We started with the frogs legs appetizer. Perfect garlic buttery goodness. Wedge salad followed by Sautéed Whitefsh and the Tuna Niçoise salad. Perfectly prepared and so very delicious. Wines by the bottle were priced fairly. We were happy to come back to one of our favorite restaurants and find it still a great place to eat.

If you're looking for a really wonderful meal in Harbor Springs, The New York is the place. We find it to be consistently excellent. Recently we enjoyed a meal of spicy steamed mussels (in coconut milk!), halibut with red pepper and crab meat couscous, veal chop and cherry chocolate cake. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable. The surroundings are cozy and warm. And they have all you can eat crab legs on Mondays. You won't be disappointed (I hope!).

I walked in at ten minutes to ten on the Saturday before the 4th of July and the manager on duty tells me the kitchen is closed! Really?!?! People sitting at the bar eating, tables still working on entrees in the dining room, every other restaurant in town is hopping because of a busy holiday weekend, I don't get it. So I asked what closing time is, the MOD says we don't have a published closing time. In his defense, he did offer me a bowl of soup, but he seemed more interested in pushing me out the door. It's called the hospitality industry for a reason, they don't get it.

Good food, but snooty attitude. The menu doesn't change much, and the sauces are way too heavy most of the time. The atmosphere, attitude and menu are stuck someplace in a 1950's supper club, so it's VERY retro old-school. Good food, but nothing special.

My wife and I journeyed to Harbor from Boyne City Sunday night for a very rare date night. A customer of ours had recommended the New York and we were very much looking forward to an adult evening out. Earlier in the evening, we called to verify seating times and were told they seat until 9pm on Sundays. We arrived at 8:02pm and were told by the hostess that the "chef told her after our call that they needed to close at 8pm tonight". She was apologetic and surprisingly upbeat about the situation even though she acknowledged that we had called ahead and traveled an hour to come have dinner. No offer to seat us, provide us with a limited menu offering, last of the daily specials, consult with the chef since it was just after 8 and the fact that we had called earlier, etc. Really??? She then consulted with a gentlemen at the bar and cheerily provided us with a 20% off coupon for our next visit. Needless to say, there will NOT be a second visit. We are business owners ourselves and would be horrified if one of our customers was ever treated in this way. Hours should be hours-abide by your posted hours. This is one of the consistent, negative comments we hear from people about "up north" businesses. If you have to close early, wouldn't it be a good idea to notify the person answering the phone??? We left in disbelief. We then traveled to City Park Grill and had a very pleasant experience. AND, the restaurant was PACKED. Imagine that! Never ceases to amaze me that how poorly some businesses are operated.

This place is over-rated, old-school, and like it's namesake, they really think they have the corner on sophistication. The problem is that the chef probably hasn't left Michigan for at least 3 decades. The menu is boring, the food is dripping in butter and oil and salt to make up for the lack of innovative or inspired cuisine. The service is terrible, there is no view and it's dark and stinky inside. This place is over-priced and snobby for absolutely no reason at all. The food is terrible. I have been here several times now- each summer someone in my family wants to go here and each time I keep hoping it will be better but it never is. This past summer my sister got food poisoning from the scallops and when we called the restaurant the next day to tell them you know what they said- "hmmm, sorry...' That's it. They didn't offer anything at all. We spent over $300 the previous night there and they just say- "sorry" and hung up on her! I love Harbor Springs and I love Northern Michigan- it's definitely got the vibe of the Hamptons without the pretension (mostly) but what it needs more than anything is some decent and innovative food. The New York pretends to be the leader in cuisine in Harbor but it absolutely doesn't live up it's rep. Not in quality of food, service or location. Basically, this place is horrible- a waste of time and money. The food is much better at the shack on the public beach across the street...

As good as it gets in northern Michigan. The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is classic. And the wine list is packed full of great deals. I really enjoy the caesar salad, lamb shank and the carrot cake is to die for! Definitely make a reservation in the summer though. The north is packed in the summer!

If you're looking for a quality meal provided by an attentive wait staff then look no further than The New York restaurant. Their menu possesses an urban flair that airs on the side of sophistication. You'll find everything from the more traditional Cesar salad and broiled Michigan whitefish to a more contemporary roasted beet salad with the lesser seen Atlantic salmon, all prepared to perfection. The original building first opened in 1904 and today it still boasts many of the original architectural gems. I think you will find the atmosphere as charming and palatable as you will find the food. Enjoy!!

Attended the Wine dinner on 6/19/13. Pairings of wines from 2 Lads Winery on Mission Peninsula and special offerings from Chef/Owner Matt Bugerera. Bill Miller, maître de and sommelier out did themselves with fabulous food paired perfectly with some of Michigan's finest wines. The sparkling was a pinot grigio (new to me, but excellent) that was just right for the bruchetta and deviled eggs. A salad with a ground lamb piece matched with their reisling. The rainbow trout was paired with their pinot noir, 2011 that was a fine example of the peninsula"s terroir and the fruit. The meat entrée was a pork shoulder, roasted to perfection and served with the cab franc/merlot blend. Fresh strawberries for desert, awesome. Portions of both food and wine were generous, the wine maker was entertaining and knowledgeable (native of South Africa). All in all, a memorable evening. Thank you Matt and Bill; these guys are on their game.

Although we live in Harbor Springs during the summer, we stopped going to The New York Restaurant a couple years ago due to mediocre food. However, last year as well as this summer (including tonight!), we have been really pleased with the food as well as the service. The menu is diverse. Each of the four of us had something different, i.e. fish, chicken, pork and beef, and we were all very happy with our dinners. Our waitress was nice, efficient and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. We had an enjoyable evening all the way around.
